Our vintage car 'Luigi'

  • Ford Coupé
  • Year 1940
  • V8 cylinder / 3610 cc / approx. 90 hp
  • Various periodic technical modifications and reinforcements
  • Nickname ‘Luigi’

The car was imported to Switzerland from the USA in spring 2016 and classified as a veteran vehicle. In spite of its very good condition it was then completely dismantled, all parts checked and rebuilt. Various original reinforcements, usually only installed in the convertible version, found their way into the chassis and suspension of 'Luigi'. The petrol tank was increased to 110 litres and space created for two spare wheels. Every corner, no matter how small, was made accessible so that spare parts could be added later. A discrete stand heater was built in and several USB sockets where also installed.

The engine was completely disassembled and revised but, in order to preserve longevity and reliability,  no performance improvements were implemented. And none was required because the original V8 engine already had enough steam under the hood. With a tail wind and homesickness real 165 km/h can be achieved but then the chassis reaches its limits despite the Panhard-Rode and longitudinally mounted leaf springs. Only the 5 speed gear box and shock absorbers are from recent times and permitted by Rally Organizers.

Some modifications have been made with regard to safety. Instead of the full length front seat two individual Recaro bucket seats with safety belts have been installed.  A hazard warning system and  modern lamp inserts provide more safety in the event of a breakdown and more vision at night.
